Someone tells you the benchtop has to be replaced. Sometimes that is true. More often the person saying it does not do repairs. Here is how we decide, on our stone benchtop and laminate benchtop jobs across Sydney.
The four questions that decide it
1. Is the damage in one place, or everywhere? A chip, a burn, a crack, a scratch or a dull patch is local damage. The rest of the top is fine. Local damage is a repair. A top that is worn, scratched and dull across the whole surface is a different job. That is a full re-polish or a replacement.
2. Is the top still solid? A cracked top that is not moving can be filled and colour matched. A top that is cracked through, with the two sides moving, needs support under it or a new top. Press each side of the crack and see if it moves.
3. Is the top fitted right? A top that was cut short, fitted out of level or joined badly cannot be repaired into a good top. That is a stone mason or joiner job.
4. Is the damage what you want fixed, or is it the whole kitchen? If you want a new colour, a new layout or a new edge profile, you want a new top. A repair gives you back the top you have.
If the answer is local damage on a solid, well fitted top that you would otherwise keep, it is a repair.
What replacement involves
People ask for a repair quote and a replacement quote and compare the numbers. The numbers matter. So does everything around them.
| Repair with us | Replace | |
|---|---|---|
| Visits | One, for most damage | Template, delivery, fitting and a plumber |
| Kitchen out of use | An hour or two around the repair | From the day the old top comes out |
| Sink and taps | Stay in place | Disconnected and reconnected |
| Splashback | Untouched | May no longer match the new slab |
| Colour | Matched to the top you have | A new slab, from a new batch |
| Waste | None | The old top goes to landfill |
A replacement is the right call sometimes. It is not the default answer to a chip.
When we say replace
We repair surfaces for a living, and we still tell people to replace when that is the honest answer.
- The crack goes through the top and the two sides move.
- The laminate has lifted across most of the length, or the board is soaked and crumbling along a long run.
- The top was cut or fitted wrong.
- The whole surface is worn out, and a repair would leave one good patch on a tired top.
When we say replace, we say it before we quote, so you do not lose time waiting on us.
When repair is the clear answer
- A chip on an edge, a corner, a sink cut-out or a cooktop cut-out.
- A burn mark from a pan, a pot, an iron or an air fryer.
- A scratch, a scuff or a dull patch from a scourer or a cleaner.
- A stable crack.
- An old tap hole or a hole from a removed fitting.
- A join that has opened a little and shows a line.
All of these are repaired on site, colour matched in place, and most are done in one visit.
How to get a straight answer
Send us two photos. One close up of the damage, with a coin next to it for scale. One from further back, so we can see the whole top. Tell us if a crack moves when you press it. We reply with a fixed written quote within one business day. If the top should be replaced, we tell you that instead.
